Learn To Back

I am a firm believer that teaching your horse to back up in hand is one of the best things you can do.  Now before you think, "My horse can already do this" and disregard reading further……humor me for just a second.

Give your horse this little test:  Can you back your horse with the slightest of pressure on the lead rope?  Can you make a perfect square while backing?  Will your horse willingly back for 5 straight minutes without getting frustrated and trying to evade your command?  Will he move off your body language regarding moving faster and slowing down?  Once you begin adding backing regularly into your daily training you will soon see a softer, more rounded and coordinated horse.  Take this exercise right up into the saddle and practice until you can do this with little or no pressure on the bit.  Believe me, you will love the results!
